KAT HARVEY
Kat Harvey is a cheesemonger and cheese maker and has curated the finest selection of specialty cheeses from Australia and abroad. Kat’s passion for cheese has come from far and wide. She learnt to make with Australia’s best spending 5 years at Nimbin Valley Dairy and previously at Holy Goat in Castlemaine, Victoria and learning raw milk Camembert making in France. Previous to her cheese making career, Kat worked at the renowned Formaggi Ocello in Surry Hills and as a chef in some of Sydney’s most delicious restaurants. Now she spends her days selling her finely curated selection and making killer toasties in Murwillumbah!
What brought you to Murwillumbah and what do you love most about living in town or in the surrounding areas? I'd never been to Murwillumbah before and we came one weekend about five years ago for the Arts Trail and basically never left. I fell in love with the landscape and how stunning the area is.
What inspired you to start your business in Murwillumbah? Originally I had a small pop up cheese shop in Burleigh, then at Keith's shop of really good things (now closed). From KEITH (Katie and Matt) I got a really great opportunity to see if Murwillumbah loves cheese as much as I do. Buoyed by the community's support and enthusiasm I took the plunge. Plus cheese itself is a destination. Combined with a great community, a beautiful town and the love of delicious food.
Can you share a story about a time when the Murwillumbah community came together to support one another? Post flood was a peak time we all needed support. We had many people help us out when the shop flooded. Not only with the day to day things. But also people buying gift vouchers for themselves for when we'd reopen, to keep the cashflow going. So many people here really do shop locally and buy from small businesses rather than heading up the coast or buying things online.
What are some spots in town that you would recommend to visitors? There's so many wonderful people doing great things. Our tea towel says it all! My favourite spots around town - Bistro Livi, Jo Norton Ceramics, Tweed Regional Museum, Tweed River House, Ben's Patisserie and Old Quarter Coffee.
How do you envision the future of Murwillumbah? Bright, growing and strong. Mainly because there's a community here that cares about each other.
