HUMANS OF MURWILLUMBAH | PART TWO
JO NORTON
Jo Norton is a full-time studio artist who works primarily with clay. Her studio is located in the vibrant M Art's Precinct, where she creates, showcases, and offers her work for sale. In this space, she explores the endless possibilities of clay, crafting pieces that reflect both artistic expression and functional design.
What brought you to Murwillumbah and what do you love most about living in town or in the surrounding areas? Originally from Sydney, we spent 30 years living just across the border in Currumbin Valley and Palm Beach. Eventually, we decided it was time to move back over the border for a change of pace—a more relaxed, community-focused lifestyle with a view of trees rather than buildings.
What inspired you to start your business in Murwillumbah? I’ve always enjoyed working where I live, and Murwillumbah, with its vibrant arts community and stunning small-town charm, offers the perfect setting. The town is home to a range of galleries and is surrounded by an inspiring landscape that fuels creativity.
Can you share a story about a time when the Murwillumbah community came together to support one another? Empty Bowls, dedicated to raising awareness and funds for the homeless and hungry in our community. 100% of the funds raised go to directly to @agapeoutreachinc, an incredible organization doing vital work to help those in need right here in our community. This year, we held the event in Murwillumbah at @m.arts.precinct who generously donated their amazing space. This event is a 100% donation-driven cause, with everyone involved— from potters to chefs, to printers— donating their time and products to make it all possible.
What are some spots in town that you would recommend to visitors? The art and view of Wollumbin from the Tweed Regional Gallery. Taste and purchase amazing cheese from Kat Harvey Cheese. Enjoy original Art by local artists at the Mart’s Precinct before walking the town and be inspired by the local small independant businesses. Farmers market every Wednesday morning at the show ground. Chocolate milkshake at the Astral Cafe. The rail trail.
How do you envision the future of Murwillumbah? I see Murwillumbah’s future revolving around its growing arts and cultural scene, embracing sustainability, and balancing development with a commitment to its natural and community values.
